Apple invited the press for October 28, and phones had a rough quarter

Apple sent the invite on October 20. The event is October 28, and the billing is Pro. The same day, the industry’s own scoreboard showed a phone market that just had a bad quarter.

What the invite does and does not say

Apple’s media invites are a date, a location, and a hint. This one points at Pro products. It does not list a price, a ship date, or a feature. Treating a rendered rumor as the agenda is how people write a review of a phone that was not announced. Wait until the 28th.

One concrete Apple number did land on the 20th, and it was not a spec. The company said it would commit up to $100 million toward US titanium used in the iPhone Duo. That is a supply promise, small next to a flagship launch and specific enough to be real. It says the Duo line is far enough along that Apple is booking material for it.

The market the new phones walk into

IDC put third-quarter global shipments at 255.3 million phones, down 22 percent year over year. The names in that count include Samsung, Apple, Xiaomi, OPPO, and vivo. China, counted on its own, fell 15.4 percent, and Huawei grew inside a shrinking market. A Pro event in a down quarter is a bet that the top of the lineup still sells when the middle does not.

If you are waiting to buy, the only disciplined move is the one you already know. The October 28 keynote is eight days from the invite. Discounts on the current phone usually tell you more, that week, than a leak does.
