OpenAI’s models are moving into Google Cloud

On October 21, OpenAI and Google Cloud said the models and the Codex coding agent are coming to Model Garden. A few years ago that pairing would have been the punchline. Now it is a purchasing option.

What was actually announced

OpenAI’s own post says customers get native access to its frontier models and to Codex, the agent that works through software tasks, inside Google Cloud’s access controls and data rules. Purchases go through the Google Cloud Marketplace. If a company has already promised Google a chunk of cloud spend, that commitment can be drawn down here.

Google Cloud’s description of the lineup, reported alongside the post, names three models for three jobs: Astra for heavy coding and research, GPT-6.1 Sol for cheaper agent work, and GPT-6 Luna for everyday tasks. OpenAI says general availability is planned in the coming weeks, and that customers can request access before then. The same models are also headed for Google’s Antigravity coding tool and the Gemini Agent. Which exact model lands in those products is not spelled out yet.

What it does not change

Microsoft is still OpenAI’s primary cloud. Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s president, called Google Cloud a place customers already build, and framed the deal as more choice. Thomas Kurian, who runs Google Cloud, said the point is letting a team pick a model for a job instead of being stuck with one house brand.

For a buyer, the practical question is boring and useful. If your data already lives in Google Cloud, you may not have to haul it to another platform just to try a GPT model. Wait for the access email before you rewrite a procurement plan. A private preview is not the same thing as a switch you can flip for the whole company on Monday.
