The reported price is $7.5 billion, and the target is not a bank. On October 19 The New York Times said Stripe had agreed to buy OpenRouter, the API that lets a developer swap models without rewriting the call.
Why a payments company wants a model router
OpenRouter’s customers already treat models like a commodity. One integration, many labs, a bill at the end. Stripe’s customers already trust it with the bill. Put those together and the checkout for AI usage starts to look like the checkout for everything else Stripe touches.
That is the strategic reading. The factual one is shorter. A newspaper reported an agreed deal at about $7.5 billion. Until Stripe and OpenRouter publish the terms, the number can still move, and the close can still slip.
If your app uses the router
Do not rip out the integration because of a headline. Do write down what you depend on: the model list, the price, the latency, and whether your key is an OpenRouter key or a pass-through to OpenAI or Anthropic.
A new owner can keep all of that, or can decide the valuable part is the customer relationship and the routing margin. You will know which one you bought only when the pricing page changes.
